Installing the Rolling Jackass on a Tern GSD Cargo Bike

Put a little grease on the first few threads of all hardware to prevent galling of the threads.

Remove the thin plastic cover held to the underside of the frame with zip ties. Remove the chain guide wheel using a pair of 5mm hex keys. Note what order the chain guide wheel hardware goes in.

Slip the two M8 bolts through the stock kickstand plate hole with a washer under the head of each. Slip the long u-bolt over the cross-member of the frame in front of the kickstand plate.

Place the rectangular aluminum tube spacer vertically over the u-bolt legs so the round cutout fits against the cross-member. Slip the centerstand base into place over the ends of the u-bolt legs and two M8 bolts. Thread on the M8 nuts finger tight.

Slip the angle bracket over the ends of the u-bolt legs and install the two 1/4"-20 nuts finger tight.

Start to tighten all four nuts. The bolt holes have some wiggle room so check to make sure the stand is square to the frame and the new angle tab lines up with the old chain guide wheel tab. Fully tighten all four nuts.

Reinstall the chain guide wheel on the new angle bracket, maintaining the order of the parts that you originally removed.

Route the actuation cable housing along the frame, retaining with zip ties, and install the lever on the handlebars. The lever should be installed in a location that allows it to be pulled all the way to the bar, without interference.

Actuate the stand by pulling on the lever, and pull the bike back and up onto the stand. Take note of the elevation of the tire which has been lifted off the ground. Too high and it will be difficult to set the bike onto the stand, especially when loaded. Too low, and the bike may be unstable when parking on uneven or soft ground. Aim for about 1/2” by adjusting the threaded feet. Lock the feet in place by tightening the jam nuts against the leg with a 9/16” wrench.

Double check that the cable tension is sufficient to actuate the stand. When the lever is pulled all the way to the handlebars, the feet of the stand should be touching the ground. If not, there is a barrel adjuster on the lever, and one at the base of the stand that will allow you to fine tune the cable tension.

The stand is now ready for use!
